How a “phone” got me hooked on photography
I’ve had an iPhone for about a year now, and I’m astonished at how many photos I’ve taken since I purchased it. In the past year, I’ve added well over 6,000 new images to my iPhoto library. Initally, I used the iPhone’s built-in camera just to document things: books I wanted to remember to get, color combinations I liked, architectural detailing of a handrail, etc.
I began noticing that a few photos actually looked quite nice; the composition, colors, and subject matter were very pleasing. I started taking a lot more photos, and more often. I actually started to really get into snapping pix. A lot of stuff was sort of deadpan, but I really enjoyed taking photos, and I always had a camera, because it’s built into the phone.
Now, I know that the iPhone wasn’t the first device to include a camera, but I DO know that it was the first phone I used where the functions of picture taking were simple and intuitive. Add in the tight integration with iPhoto on my Mac, and it became immediately apparent that taking photos, editing, cataloging and sharing them was easy and fun.
I’m hooked on taking pix. I think it’s really cool how a “phone” got me excited about photography. We all understand how important great design is, and I think this is a delightful example.
